![]() The other being a title I reviewed a few weeks ago known as Inscrpytion.8-bit games are reviving and, at present, there are loads of games that revindicate these pixelated graphics. ![]() Not a terribly way to kill an afternoon, especially if you have a friend to play it with.īroforce is another game where the early conception for it came from a game submitted to Ludum Dare, a game development competition where designers are given 72 hours to make a game. Broforce was a fun trip down "Scroll right while gunning things down" memory lane but once it was over I felt no compulsion to seek out more content for it. I clocked north of a thousand hours playing Contra in my youth but part of that had to do with there not being much else to play/do back then. There's no real story to speak of so it's not like you're ruining any narrative here. The humor is a bit of an eye roll, but not too bad that it detracts from the game. I didn't really feel the need to play any more levels as 5 hours was more than enough time to experience everything the game had to offer me as is. There are numerous community made levels but finding decent ones takes a bit of hunting and scrounging. ![]() The main campaign is pretty short, clocking in at only a few hours. The destructible terrain stops being a clever way to advance and just an option to tunnel from one end to the other if you don't want to deal with enemies. It basically turns from a rather clever/fun action platformer into a huge RNG-fest. Enemies start to bee line straight for you which makes any attempt at strategy no longer relevant. Probably intended of course, but eventually you start dying due to stuff exploding off screen. Combine that with an option to bring your best bro with you in co-op and ascend to glorious murder Valhalla and you have one adrenaline fueled experience awaiting you. The variety of weapons, characters, enemies and way to combine all three in glorious machinations of death keeps the game fresh from beginning to end. I was 7 again, eagerly slotting in Contra, unaware of what would become a lifelong obsession with moving to the right and absolutely murdering everything in my path. Of note is the terrain is as destructible as our enemies are.īroforce is one of those games that instantly take me back to being a kid again and playing a genre for the first time. When we die we respawn as a different action hero parody (such as a Rambo or William Wallace) with new abilities and continue plowing through whatever level we're on. Gameplay consists mostly of getting guns and shooting things in old school action platforming style. We take on ever escalating groups of evil in our mission to spread freedom everywhere, by force when necessary. We play as a number of action hero parodies who belong to the paramilitary group aptly named Broforce. Add a dash of "America, heck yeah!" and shouting the name of the game really loudly and you've got.this. Released in 2015 during the heyday of 'throw stuff at a wall and see what sticks' bullet hell indie games. ![]() The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games Listīroforce is a side scrolling action game developed by Free Lives.
